Books

Brian and I went to the book store the other day and searched through the TINY adoption section. We purchased 'The complete book of international adoption' and 'Twenty things adopted children with their adoptive parents knew'. When we got home we searched the web for more and of course we found hundreds. Please let me know what books you have read that you thought where interesting. We are ready to start hitting the books!

I LOVE both of those books, they are 2 of my favorites!!!

Cross-Cultural Adoption by Amy Coughlin and Caryn Abramowitz is wonderful too. This is a question answer book for both kid's questions about your adoption (great for nieces / nephews, etc.) and adult's questions. You will be surprised at the questions you are asked about your adoption. I am sure they are already pouring in, and sometimes people have very little tact when asking, although I don't think they usually mean to hurt feelings. Great Book!

The Primal Wound by Nancy Newton Verrier I also purchased but haven't finished. This book is supposed to be excellent, it talks to attachment, bonding, loss, etc. It is supposed to be a super helpful book in helping you understand what an adopted child faces emotionally.

Oh my. Suzanne (of Matt and Suzanne) is the MASTER of reading material. Absolutely, hands down. Her blog has so much helpful info.

We read quite a few, but our favorite was actually a DVD series called, "Because They Waited" by Heart of the Matter Seminars.

This was referred to us by another couple who has adopted (and he's an MD), and this was fabulous. Very good information to hear before traveling, and also very good to brush up on after we arrived home. Good stuff!

I also agree with Christy- Cross Cultural Adoption was a book I handed out to our families.

So far we have "Attaching in Adoption" by Deborah Gray. It is very comprehesive - it even has a chapter on "Grief and its Effects" that focuses on both adoptive children (grief over leaving the orphanage and caregivers, etc.) and adoptive parents (grief caused by things such as infertility and prior loss).
